This is what the future of learning will look like - 3 Day After Tomorrow horizons for companies Laurence Van Elegem - June 18, 2018

In these fast-changing times, it’s fascinating to see how most corporate training programs are still focusing on old-school types of intellectual growth. They tend to foster the individual rather than the company’s ecosystem and stimulate specialized knowledge.

But as our context is evolving, so should the way we help our employees grow. Here’s how I believe that ‘learning’ inside companies is going to evolve, divided into three radical horizons.

Corporate Training Dat Horizons

DAT Horizon 1 – from individual knowledge to collaborative skills

There is so much information for grabs and it keeps changing so fast, that the value of pure "knowledge" is diminishing, and fast. Especially now that technology is beating us at the knowledge game. So instead of focusing on facts, and on specialization, Day After Tomorrow training should target the type of skills that allow us to cope with – and thrive in – VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) environments.

DAT Horizon 2 – from ‘shaping’ to finding

The first DAT horizon is still a great deal about ‘shaping’ the individual and making sure they have the skills needed for their job, though. But HR can and should start to use technology to personalize the working experience to the employee instead of training the employee ‘for the job’. This second horizon in employee growth will be AI-driven, personalized and inspired by the evolutions in marketing, as Peter Hinssen explained at HR Tech World. It will be about finding the right employees and building the workplace around them: from shaping & training to finding and nurturing.

DAT Horizon 3 - Invisible & frictionless training

The next phase is even more radical. It’s what will happen when we will no longer need to invest energy in learning but start to merge with technology and connect our brains directly to the cloud. There will be no more friction between ‘knowledge’ and what the individual can or should know. Learning will become updating.
